Hampta Pass Trek
TREK OVERVIEW
The Indian Himalayas offer a magical blend of breathtaking views, spiritual calm, and soul-soothing silence — and among them, the Hampta Pass stands out as one of the most captivating trails. This high-altitude pass acts as a dramatic bridge between two contrasting worlds: the lush green valleys of Kullu and the stark, barren beauty of Lahaul, all within a span of just 20 to 25 km.
Your journey begins from the base village Jobra, heading towards Chika, the first campsite. Along the way, you’ll be greeted by dense forests, sparkling streams, and the raw charm of Himalayan wilderness.
As you ascend to Balu ka Ghera, the trail winds through alpine meadows and towering peaks. The meadows slowly give way to rugged terrain and giant rock formations. Soon, you’ll find yourself standing at Hampta Pass, at an elevation of nearly 14,000 feet, taking in the panoramic Himalayan views and breathing in the silence of the mountains.
The descent towards Chatru brings an entirely new landscape — the point where the paths to Spiti, Rohtang, and Hampta Pass converge. You’ll cross icy rivers and witness jaw-dropping vistas of Mount Indrasan and Mount Deo Tibba, making every step of this trek truly unforgettable.

Trek Itinerary
The journey starts with a short drive from Manali to Jobra, the trek’s starting point. From here, a scenic trek begins through pine, maple, and silver birch forests, crossing wooden bridges and bubbling streams. The trail leads to Chika, a picturesque meadow with river views and dramatic cliffs.
Overnight stay in tents at Chika campsite.
Today’s trail follows the Rani Nallah stream, with river crossings and boulder zones. Gradually, the terrain opens into alpine meadows surrounded by high mountains. You’ll reach Balu ka Ghera, the base for Hampta Pass — a sandy, glacier-formed bed that offers clear skies and cold winds.
Camp here with a view of the towering peaks around.
This is the most thrilling day of the trek. The steep climb to Hampta Pass (~14,000 ft) offers mind-blowing views of Lahaul valley on one side and lush Kullu on the other. After soaking in the scenery, begin your descent to Sheagoru, a serene high-altitude desert valley.
Camp at Sheagoru near the glacial stream under a sky full of stars.
Trek down along glacial streams and moraine patches to reach Chatru, where the roads to Spiti, Rohtang, and Hampta intersect. If the weather and road conditions allow, a drive to the breathtaking Chandratal Lake is possible. Spend time at this moon-shaped high-altitude lake and return to Chatru by evening.
Overnight stay at Chatru in tents or a fixed camp.
After breakfast, drive back to Manali via the iconic Rohtang Pass (subject to road status). As you descend from barren Spiti-like landscapes to the greenery of Kullu valley, you’ll reflect on a trek that offered two starkly different worlds in just five days.
